girlfriends of different ethnic and economic backgrounds, all attended a
Manhattan high school and specialized in fashion design. Galleria,
Chanel, Dorinda and Aqua form a feline-themed teen girl group. The
Cheetah Girls began as a 2003 Disney Channel Original Movie based on the
best-selling book series for kids and tweens. Due to the popularity of
the film, Disney formed a singing group with three of the lead
actresses, also named "The Cheetah Girls". In 2005, The Cheetah Girls were signed to Walt Disney Records and embarked on their first sold-out concert tour supporting their hit album Cheetah-Licious Christmas. One of the Cheetah Girl characters was named after author Deborah Gregory's favorite mall in Houston, Texas, the Galleria. In fact, the Cheetah Girls didn’t make their debut in a movie. Actually, the movie is based on a 16-book series by Deborah Gregory. Basically Gregory aimed for the “tween” market, that age when girls are not yet teens and yet no longer little kids. However, the television movie’s success spawned an actual all-girl group which sings such pop/hip-hop infused tunes as “Five More Days ‘Til Christmas” and “Cheetah-Licious Christmas.” After the group breaks up, it seems like that supreme bond of friendship has been broken, too, but the girls quickly regroup and rally behind a “former” Cheetah Girl in crisis.
